The hype surrounding Zombies mode included in Black Ops 7 was put on overdrive, and it is due to Cursed Mode. During Lobby and online matches, Treyarch left behind the game-changer: this hardcore experience will not unlock to the whole world until the first team in the world completes the Easter egg of the Ashes of the Damned. It has become a worldwide treasure hunt and a game of life and death, and people are losing their heads over it.
Streamers already work the midnights, work out plans to the Easter egg. Just imagine the raid races in Destiny 2, except it's zombies fans who solve the puzzle first and will be rewarded with a "global unlock" switch, unlocking Cursed Mode to all players. Why is Cursed Mode worthy of the wait? It is a love poem to old school zombies. You have nothing but a pistol and your brains, and you must study all the corners of Ashes of the Damned--the dotted mist of the lonely Vandorn farm, to the high Yasnuta Plaza.
Then there are the relics. These obscure objects introduce debuffs to further increase the difficulty. Suppose you get restricted to only four perks or no ammo caches--then all of the choices become important. Treyarch has intentions to add more relics after launch and thus the grind will remain fresh even after a long time.
It is no mere gimmick of an unlock method; it is one that is bringing the community together. Hardcore players have their time of the spotlight and the casuals applaud them. According to Treyarch, as they confirmed to their post-beta Q&A, Cursed Mode is all about the skill being rewarded over convenience--and nothing makes you use a skill like making the community unlock the fun first.
