The Seven Saints Choir
“The Seven Saints” Chamber Choir was founded in 1903 at the church of the same name in Sofia - Bulgaria with the help and efforts of well-known figures of the then-fledgling Bulgarian musical culture. Among them names of Marin Dryanovski (1882-1965), Dragomir Kazakov (1866-1948), Panayot Dimitrov (Otito) (1882-1941) and Vladimir Galabov (1884-1958) stand out.
The period 1912-1928 was particularly in the history of the choir, for during this time the ensemble’s conductor was none other than the Patriarch of Bulgarian music, the composer Dobri Hristov (1875-1940). For the choir he created his most important sacred works, including the Liturgy No.1 of 1924. During the following decades, a succession of knowledgeable experts on Bulgarian sacred music, among them Georgi Popvasilev, Ivan Kourtev, Nikola Seizov, Mihail Arnaudov, Pavel Stefanov, Avram Vachev and Miroslav Popsavov have occupied the post of conductor of the ensemble.

At present “The Seven Saints” Chamber Choir is comprised of young professional singers (graduates of the State Music Academy “Pancho Vladigerov” in Sofia and the Academy of Music and Dances Art in Plovdiv) and is established as one of the leading Bulgarian ensembles specializing in Orthodox sacred music of all styles and epochs. Since 1999, already as a vocal ensemble, the choir has enriched its repertoire with the music of both Renaissance and contemporary Catholic composers. An additional aspect of its concert appearances is the choir’s participation in performances of secular cantatas and oratorios by contemporary composers, as well as of Renaissance, Baroque and Classical period operas.

The international activities of “The Seven Saints” Chamber Choir are as broad as its repertoire. In the brief period from 2000 to 2003, the ensemble has realized multiple concert tours to Belgium, Spain, Holland, the Czech Republic, Germany and Great Britain, taking part in prestigious festivals such as “Semana de Musica y Polyfonia Sacra de Segovia”, “Ciclo de Musica Sacra de Bilbao”, “Semana de Musica y Polyfonia Sacra de Santander” and “Ciclo de Musica Religiosa de Madrid” (Spain), “Festival Van Vlaanderen-Laus Polyphoniae” and „Europalia” (Belgium), „Festival Oude muziek - Utrecht” (the Netherlands), „Prague spring” International Music Festival (Czech Republic), “Cambridge simmer festival”, „Cheltenham International Festival of Music” and “Birmingham International Festival” (Great Britain) and many others. These guest performances were broadcast on radio and television by OER and OETV in Holland, Flemish Radio and Klara Radio & TV in Belgium, RTS 1 – Televisione Svizzera in Switzerland, BBC Radio 3 and Czech National Radio.

“The Seven Saints” Chamber Choir participates regularly in the important Bulgarian music festivals Sofia Music Weeks and Plovdiv Chamber Music Festival. It is also the subject of numerous film documentaries and concert broadcasts on Bulgarian National Television. Together with its concert activities, the choir performs more than 120 religious services (Vespers and Liturgies) annually at “The Seven Saints” church in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Since 1992 the chief conductor of “The Seven Saints” Chamber Choir has been Dimitar Grigorov (b. 1968). He has received a master degree in choral conducting from the State Music Academy “Pancho Vladigerov” in Sofia and has led a number of Bulgarian choral formations, including the Plovdiv Singing Society “Angel Bukoreshtliev”. Since 1995 he has taught choral conducting and sacred music at the Academy of Music and Dance Art in Plovdiv. He is also a participant in many workshops dedicated to the theory and practice of sacred music in Bulgaria and abroad and the author of the “Music Sacra” radio program for Bulgarian National Radio. The choirmaster of the ensemble, also since 1992, is another State Music Academy graduate in choral conducting, Snezhana Grigorova (b. 1971).
