The zurna, a wooden whistle with cane reed and oboe-like sound, is among the most colourful wind instruments in traditional Bulgarian music. The CD presents 16 instrumental performances, almost all of which are characteristic of the Bulgarian folk tradition from Southwest Bulgaria. They are a small part of the Kurtovs familiy repertoire, who perform the current CD. The zurna players are from the village of Kavrakirovo who are today’s best representatives of the Petrich style of performing.
