International music festival "Macedonia Folk"

The Municipality of Blagoevgrad, under the patronage of Blagoevgrad’s mayor Lazar Prichkapov, organised the second edition of the international festival ‘Macedonia Folk’ from 21 to 24 September 2006.

The festival is a competition in four categories:

First – for performers and arrangers of traditional urban songs. Each performer or arranger may take part with two songs.
Second – for poets, composers, arrangers, performers, having created songs on Macedonian folklore basis. Each creator or team may take part with two songs.
Third – for children and teenagers, children’s or juvenile groups, performing folklore, traditional urban or Macedonian folklore based songs.
Fourth – for performers and groups, representing the authenticity and originality of the traditional art and culture of the Macedonia folklore region.

More than 400 groups and individual performers took part in the frames of the festival. They all represented their artistic skills on the three stages: in the area of Bachinovo, the open air theatre in the Varosha quarter and the main square George Izmirliev.

On 23 September 2006, a jury, led by Nikolay Kaufman, awarded the winners:

The gala performance ‘The Balkans for Europe’ was held on 24 September 2006 and this put an end to the festival. The audience at Blagoevgrad had the chance to see performers and groups from Turkey, Serbia, Croatia, Macedonia, Greece and Bulgaria – Theodossi Spassov, the Kanarite orchestra, Eva Quartet, the Pirin Ensemble and Vesselin Marinov.
