East-West Passage Balkan World Music Festival

DETAILED PROGRAMME OF THE BALKAN WORLD MUSIC FESTIVAL
4 November
19:30 FÉLIX LAJKÓ AND HIS FRIENDS
Venue: UP Romhányi Hall
It is hard to fit Félix Lajkó's music into any category of genre or style, since it is equally characterised by classical music, the motives of Hungarian and other Eastern European folk music, or jazz and blues. His violin-playing has captivated discriminating audiences in Tokyo, Amsterdam, Berlin, Bratislava, Prague, Budapest, Braşov, Belgrade, Sarajevo, Ljubljana, Frankfurt, Lyon, Bordeaux, Venice, Verona, Edinburgh, and London. In addition to his friend and permanent partner, Antal Brasnyó (viola), he will bring two members of the Dresch Quartet to Pécs, Mihály Dresch (wind instruments) and Mátyás Szandai (double bass).

21:00 MERCAN DEDE SECRET TRIBE (TR)
Venue: UP Romhányi Hall
The music of the Turkish-born Mercan Dede, a DJ and producer living in Montreal, combines Turkish sufi music with Western European electronic music. During his career he worked with musicians and bands like Peter Murphy of the Gothic rock band Bauhaus, Aynur Dogan, Susheela Raman, Natacha Atlas, Azam Ali Musafir, Omar Sosa, Transglobal Underground, Coldcut, Dhol Foundation, Trilok Gurtu, and Pina Bausch. He will bring the Secret Tribe to Pécs, reinforced with the legendary dancing dervishes.

5 November
19:30 BORIS KOVAČ AND THE LA CAMPANELLA ORCHESTRA (SRB)
Venue: Uránia Cinema
Boris Kovač, composer, musician, multimedia artist, sound engineer, and philosopher comes from Novi Sad. He is a true polymath, perhaps the strangest figure in Serb music. His 2001 The Last Balkan Tango, reflecting upon the Balkan War, conquered the entire world. His music combines Balkan folk, the wind music of weddings and funerals, and the melancholic, almost apocalyptic tone of tango. But Kusturica-like humour is not lacking from it either. He will bring La Campanella Orchestra to Pécs, a formation complemented with the TAJJ String Quartet.

21:00 SÖNDÖRGŐ - KING FERUS MUSTAFOV (MK) - ÁGNES HERCZKU
Venue: Uránia Cinema
Söndörgő is a Hungarian world music band playing perhaps the most recent and most energetic music of this style in Hungary. Their concert also features the legendary Macedonian saxophonist, Ferus Mustafov, who has worked with the band many times in the past. In October 2009 their joint album was selected by the most prestigious world music magazine, the London-based "Songlines" in its "Top of the World" list. Also featured in the concert is one of the most popular singers of Hungarian folk music, Ágnes Herczku, who has won several eMeRTon awards.

6 November 2010
19:30 YAKAZA ENSEMBLE (TR)
Venue: Uránia Cinema
The Yakaza Ensemble was founded in 2006. Their music is a mixture of Turkish and Central Asian traditions and modern electronic effects. Their shows are accompanied by a spectacular projection. They will present their intermedial production A'mak-i Hayal in Pécs on the occasion of the East-West Passage, which is based on the mysterious novel of a 19th century Turkish author, Filibeli Ahmed Hilmi.

21:00 FANFARA ŞAVALE (RO)
Venue: Uránia Cinema
Fanfara Şavale began in a small Romanian village where practically every man plays some kind of a wind instrument. This Gypsy band of eleven members combines Gypsy folk music with the tradition of brass bands. The concert in Pécs is organised with the support of the Romanian Cultural Institute in Budapest.
